Access to Drinking Water in Bamako and Mali's Secondary Towns

Venue : Mali

In January 2025, the World Bank approved a USD 100 million IDA credit for the Mali Water Security Support Project (PASEMa), aimed at expanding safe drinking water access and safeguarding water sources in Bamako and key secondary towns. The project includes major investments in water transfer infrastructure, new pumping stations, water towers, and household connections in Bamako, while secondary cities will receive integrated water supply systems capable of delivering 24,000 m³/day. PASEMa will also introduce leak-detection systems to reduce losses and implement nature-based solutions to protect water sources in the Niger and Senegal river basins. The project is expected to benefit around 500,000 people, including 227,000 gaining basic water services and 30,000 rural residents benefiting from ecosystem restoration.
