Training Course on ‘Waste Water Management and Recycling’

Within the framework of its Water Resources Management Capacity Building Programme (Water-CaB) and in line with the relevant resolutions of the 4th Session of the Islamic Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water, SESRIC, in collaboration with the Tunisian Agency for Technical Cooperation (ATCT), organised the Training Course on “Waste Water Management and Recycling” on 13-16 June 2022 through an online video conferencing platform.

The training course was provided by a competent expert from the Tunis International Center for Environmental Technologies (CITET) for the benefit of 102 experts and executives from the relevant Ministries and national institutions in charge of wastewater management and recycling in 22 OIC Member Countries.

The training course aimed at strengthening the technical capacities of participants in wastewater management and providing them with the relevant knowledge and information required to enable their relevant national institutions to process wastewater in a safe and environmentally sustainable manner as well as treat it for utilisation by recycling and reuse.

The training course commenced with the opening remarks of Mr. Fadi Abdullah FARASIN, Assistant Director General of SESRIC, who underscored the importance of managing wastewater and recycling to produce treated water that could safely be beneficial for agricultural purposes, landscape irrigation and industrial processes, which would augment traditional water supplies to meet water demand in the OIC Member Countries. During his remarks, Mr. FARASIN also briefed the participants on SESRIC’s efforts in the domain of water within the scope of its mandated areas of statistics, research and training.

In his welcoming remarks, H.E. Mr. El Borni SALHI, Director General of the Tunisian Agency for Technical Cooperation (ATCT), began by thanking SESRIC for jointly organising this important training course for the benefit of participants from the relevant Ministries and national institutions in the OIC Member Countries. He then recalled SDG 6 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and highlighted the significance of this training course in continuing the efforts toward achieving it. He also underscored the problems caused by the uncontrolled exploitation of water, misuse of wastewater and their consequences on health, social and economic fields. Before concluding, he emphasized the need for strengthening cooperation among the OIC Member Countries through sharing knowledge, experience and best practices to confront water-related challenges.

H.E. Mrs. Kmaira BEN JANNET M’ZALI, General Director of Tunis International Center for Environmental Technologies (CITET), stressed that the organization of this training course contributes to the efforts of the international community, in particular the OIC, to strengthen capacities in the field of environmental conservation and proper recycling of resources and work to ensure the legitimate rights of current and future generations towards a sound environment and a better society. She concluded her remarks by thanking SESRIC for organizing this online training course and participants for their commitment and dedication towards enriching their knowledge and expertise on this crucial subject.

The Water Resources Management Capacity Building Programme (Water-CaB) was initiated by SESRIC in 2015 with the aim of enhancing the capacities of human resources in the OIC Member Countries in the domain of water.
