Project for Water Loss Reduction and Performance Improvement

Benin has concluded the African Development Bank (AfDB)-funded Water Loss Reduction and Performance Improvement Project, designed to strengthen drinking water services in Cotonou, Porto-Novo and nearby areas. The initiative supported large-scale meter replacement, leak detection, pipe rehabilitation and digital mapping of the water network, while training 224 staff of the national utility SONEB and sensitizing three million people on safe water use. The project achieved 99.67% physical implementation and met most of its targets, leading to improved operational efficiency and wider access to potable water. Despite delays caused by COVID-19 and major urban infrastructure works, the programme enabled significant service upgrades and provided an estimated 720,000 people with new or improved access to safe drinking water.
