Morocco Sets New African Engineering Benchmark with Al Massira Dam Perforation

Venue : Morocco

Morocco has completed a groundbreaking civil engineering operation at the Al Massira dam, marking a first for Africa in the fight against growing water stress in the Marrakech region. Around 120 km from Marrakech, engineers successfully drilled a hole in the country’s second-largest reservoir, holding 2.6 billion m³ of water to create a new intake system. The water will be transported to the city through a pipeline delivering 7 m³ per second. This project forms part of a €150 million programme financed by the African Development Bank (AFDB) to secure drinking water for two million people in Marrakech, a city where rapid urban growth and tourism have sharply increased demand. As climate change intensifies water scarcity, the initiative stands as a strategic effort to safeguard long-term water supply in the region.
