World Bank Launches Water Security and WASH Access Improvement Project

Venue : Sierra Leone

In September 2025, the World Bank approved the first phase of the Sierra Leone Water Security and WASH Access Improvement Project, supported by a USD 40 million IDA grant under a broader USD 180 million, 10-year programmatic framework. The initiative aims to strengthen sector governance, improve WASH service delivery, and enhance climate-resilient water resources management, with a focus on the Western Area. Approximately 5 million people are expected to benefit from strengthened planning and WASH services. Within the Western Area, 400,000 individuals will gain improved water access, and 1.3 million will benefit from enhanced sanitation and hygiene services. The project will also support job creation, professional capacity building, and expanded sludge treatment, contributing to long-term water security and public health resilience in Sierra Leone.
